Moisture Podcast 004
Artist: Dr.Nojoke
Design:Dmitry Chalyi

Frank Bogdanowitz alias Dr.Nojoke was born in Berlin and stayed there since then.
His childhood was imprinted by the squeaking sound of mono-kitchen-radio music. His youth was spent in headphone-trips with electronic and progressive music. The music lessons in school were a disaster, but the first guitar came as inevitable as Punk!
At home he did wild experiments with guitar, Casio, synthesizer, organ, tape-recorder and echo-machine while he played in bands all sorts of independent music like Punk, Garage, Beat, Dark Wave, Alternative, Surf, Polka, Dub, Breakbeat.
Little by little Dr.Nojoke purchased equipment for building-up a homestudio. With the project elektroblitz mitte he produced seven film- and seven theatre-soundtracks plus some trailers. Slowly he oriented himself towards electronic music/production.
Since 2005 he carried out solo-performances in galleries, clubs and festivals such as Freerotation Festival (Wales), Festival Paysages Electroniques (Lille), Live Performers Meeting (Rome), Netaudio Festival Berlin and London, Universo Parallelo (Brasil), Club Transmediale (Berlin), Boom Festival (Portugal), Save Festival (Moscow), Sol-Fest (Spain), X-Bass Festival (Napels) …
Dr.Nojoke participated on the (Club-) Transmediale regularly since 2006: on the instant-label project 33.99 Records / in 2008 on the Sonic Wargame by Xavier von Wersch and at CTM 2009 he performed together with Servando Barreiro and J-Lab as part of the Netlabel meeting.

Short video for our podcast from Dr.Nojoke:

Short unterview from Dr.Nojoke for [moisture] team:

You create music, supervise your own label, traveling … How do you have time for all these things?
Oh, yes, you are right. I feel really exhausted sometimes. I do what I can and I´d like to push exciting music. At least exciting for me, but I hope it is exciting for others as well.

Do you choose your style special for perfomances? And do you have any talismans or maybe you do some special rituals before a performance?
As Dr.Nojoke I try to adapt to the situation. Be it in a festival, open air, or club or a gallery. But it still remains the Clikno style of Dr.Nojoke. I do some other projects, which are more experimental and not about dance music. So I could play this stuff in special venues or even mix it all up, which is also fun and shows the interferences between the projects and my sound. But this happens not often. Mostly people want to hear and see just Dr.Nojoke 🙂

Between numerous amount of your works, do you have some special one which is important especially for you?
Hm, hard question. Mostly it is the latest tracks.
Important was my ambient album “Unexpressed” on UNOIKI this year. This shows a totally different aspect of my work and that´s what I set UNOIKI up for. For free and open-minded music, sound and experimentation. But yes, there are a couple of tracks, which I still think are great tunes. Like “Ping Pong Machine” (on Music Kollektiv) or my remix for Pheek´s tune “Retrouvailles” (on Seta Records) and many others. If I still feel my older tunes, I keep on playing them in the clubs.

As it is known, you like different noises. Some musicians use the sounds in their compositions, that they recorded in various places, whether underground or city park. Do you do like this??
Of course I like this. I use only field recordings. I do them on my own and I really have fun to create some techy tracks from that real ambiences. For me it is like acoustic sounds in an electronic sounding dress. It is the real world in an unreal world or so…I love it also to play thunderstorm or baby-noises in the club or sometimes I layer church bells over a muezzin or I play recordings from protests against nuclear power. So the music is made from noises I collect everywhere I am. From Brazil, Egypt, Turkey, Berlin of course etc. And in the club it all comes together – the whole world. Plus some political or critical content.
I don´t want to do just dance-music for entertainment. People should be excited on many levels – also intellectually. This is unexpected in a club – maybe unwanted and mostly unnoticed – but it is the way I´d like to do it.

Who and how instilled you the love to music?
I think it all started on a group trip as a young teenager. The others played music I never heard before, which was exciting. Then there were some radioshows I was totally in. Mostly about so called progressive and electronic music. Later on when I was totally on punk and new wave music John Peel was my idol. I think he is most responsible for my extraordinary taste on music. John Peel is still my hero, the biggest one in my life besides my parents and my best friends.

In addition to electronic music, what else causes your attention?
Oh, actually all what is around me, in my neighborhood, street-art, architecture, posters, lights, people …. But also what I read in the papers or the net and affects from things friends post on facebook. And I am pretty much into art, a visit in a modern art museum inspires me most. My head then starts to roll somehow and i feel a creative power inside of me. Music wise I really like drone and neo-classical music at the moment and music , which off the beaten track generally
And how you teel about the cinema? Is there any particular favorite genres, favorite directors?
I didn´t go to the cinema for about two years. I lost contact somehow. But I still love Andrei Tarkovsky very much, early movies from Wim Wenders, french nouvelle vague movies of the 60ies, also Tarantino 🙂 I´d like to see the new Tom Tykwer movie “Cloud Atlas”

Your sound is very experimental. How do people react to it at the parties?
Pretty good. The music might be experimental, but it is groovy, bassy, charming (hopefully), and my performance is a great to entertain the people. I performed with a lot of tiny toys, mini-instruments, children´s instruments, objects, souvenirs … plus effects and radio. So they get pretty excited about it usually.

Not so long ago, the world was rumored that the club culture in Germany is going through its worst times. Is it true?
I don´t know what you are aiming for? Do you mean the discussion about the GEMA or what?

Yes, about it)
Ah, that´s a too big topic to discuss here I guess. The GEMA won´t move I think, so as a result some clubs will have to close. Some others will become a bit more expensive or the clubs will lower the artists fee. Let´s see.

Oh, sad. I hope everything will work out. We observe.
How do you like in Russia, and what is particularly you could mention in this country?
Oh, I really don´t know Russia. Just from the distance. I don´t like the political development under Putin. It becomes less democratic. And there is a lot of oppression against minorities, free thinkers and people, who just are different. I like a lot of music coming from Russia. Russia came on the map for me through netlabels like Fragment and Cism and through Deepmix, later on with Easy Changes and today with fantastic music Kollektiv and Arma17, where I played last year at the SAVE festival – and through producers like Mono Gum, Undefault, Sander Cast, Andrey Zots, etc….

Ah yes, they are great guys, who create great music. When on a visit to Russia? Besides Moscow, whether you are invited to other cities of our country?
Nope. I was in Odessa, in Ukraine 🙂

Do like this city? What is your impressions about it?
The guys, who invited me to Odessa – the Cult-Beat crew – they showed me Odessa and I really liked it very, very much.

What do you think about the fact that digital technology replaces their analogs like synthesizers – VST Instruments, Records – MP3 files, friends are replaced by online chats, a real meeting by on-line interview?
There are advantages and disadvantages. We have to be critical and use the best of both worlds and find the right balance. It is really up to ourselves how we use it. We should never forget about the right values like friendship, humanity, peace, freedom, tolerance. This exists in both worlds, in the real and virtual one. We should stop abasement and violence and such things. The bad thing for me as composer, that I loose a lot of money through illegal shares and the bad system of the GEMA and I can´t hardly survive. People, who love my music, should be aware that I am not a machine and that I deserve also to get paid for my music. I want to tell to everybody also to think about whom you give the money – the majors or the small independent artists and labels. So if you like to support independent music it is really necessary to buy this music directly from the artists and labels – best on bandcamp.com . And your feedback is also so, so important for every artist and producer, be it on facebook or soundcloud or anywhere.
